Why Autism Friendly Training is vital for every business that serves the public
The following is an exerpt from a letter sent to us by a family who visited one of the most popular resorts in the world. A young child with ASD became overwhelmed with excitement and reacted in typical ASD fashion. A nearby untrained security staffer over-reacted and the situation was exacerbated.
... for me to be "interrogated" by this man in a vest for almost 2hours about my little baby as my husband, children and complete strangers stood by...well it was humiliating and so shockingly sad. I felt embarrassed, frustrated and ultimately discusted.
I honestly wish someone will read this...someone....anyone who can "make that change" a change in the overall training of the employees working at probably one of the most popular destinations in the world for families...ALL families. We are.not looking for fast passes or that aformentioned "carpet ride", just respect and perhaps some empathy NOT sympathy (2 different words) for families who just want the best from their trip.
This vacation......I can wrap up in one word - "horrific", NOT because my child has Autism, but only due to the lack of education and training the entire staff at Disney World has on Autism and the challenges that come with it. Name Withheld, New Jersey
This unfortunate situation not only effected the family, but many on lookers were also unnecesarrily impacted. Autism Friendly Training is designed to mitigate potentially unpleasant reactions from staff and put in effect simple solutions that will ensure the comfort of the family and bystanding guests. Simple, easy-to-understand proceedures are available to ensure the enjoyment and comfort of all guests and customers.
